Burnside gas leak stopped, roads reopened

An evacuation order has been lifted in Burnside, after a natural gas leak Wednesday morning.

Only a small section of Joseph Zatzman Drive, between Akerley Boulevard and Turner Drive, remains closed to traffic.

The city says power has been restored to the affected area.

The leak closed Akerley Boulevard between Burnside Drive and Isnor Drive, as well as Joseph Zatzman Drive between Turner Drive and Simmonds Drive to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic Wednesday morning.

Halifax Regional Police were on scene directing traffic away from the area.

City spokesman Brendan Elliott said a company hired by the municipality for a sidewalk project punctured a 4-inch gas main while excavating.

He would not disclose the name of the company involved and deferred further questions to the fire department.

Halifax Fire deputy chief Roy Hollett told News 95.7 when they arrived on scene the Lower Explosive Limits were in the “very concerned” range.

He added Nova Scotia Power had shut down grids in the area and as a precaution about 50 buildings were evacuated.
