Jono Developments wins appeal to buy former St. Pat’s-Alexandra site

An appeal to buy the former St. Patrick’s-Alexandra site has been won by a Halifax developer.

In an ongoing battle for the sought-after surplus property, Jono Developments could finally be the one to decide its future.

Jono’s $3-million offer was accepted by the city in 2011, but was then turned down in 2012 when the Nova Scotia Supreme Court sided with north end community groups.

The local non-profits had wanted to see the Brunswick St. building revamped into a community hub with affordable housing, an arts space and office space.

However, two years after the original sale was quashed, the court of appeal has ruled the city’s deal with Jono should have always remained.

That decision came down just yesterday.

The community groups that had fought to see the property made into a multipurpose centre included the Richard Preston Centre for Excellence, the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre and the North End Community Health Centre.

The 1.5-hectare property was deemed surplus six years ago, and closed down in 2011.
