Communications Nova Scotia debates making polling research public

The legislature’s public accounts committee heard officials from Communications Nova Scotia detail some important staffing and spending numbers this morning, but there’s still a lot of information that seems to be unclear.

MLA Dave Wilson questioned why the government’s communications department doesn’t make polling results open to the public.

Communications Nova Scotia’s associate deputy minister Tracey Taweel said it is available, but only if you ask.

“At this point, the research that we conduct is not available publicly, other than through a routine access request or a FOIPOP request,” she said.

Taweel said they are looking at making it more accessible, but added it wouldn’t be a quick process.

“We’d need to look at exactly what we would share,” she said. “I’m saying it’s a conversation that we’re having, and there are a few things we’d have to look at before we could sort of flip the switch on that.”

She wasn’t able to say how much money the government spends on polling either.
