The six university students who were sent to the hospital after a deck collapsed in Halifax last week may want to take legal action against the apartment owner, the builder of the deck, and possibly even the municipality.
Lawyer Michael Dull has been in contact with the victims and told the Rick Howe Show, if they go ahead with a lawsuit, they’d be looking at a laundry list of items that could all be blamed for the deck collapsing.
“Whether the landlord has an appropriate inspection regime in place, we’d be looking at whether the contractor who built the deck built it up to code,” he said.
He said the city could be involved as well, since it’s up to the municipality to ensure safety inspections are done.
Dull said it would be a lengthy process, but it would be worth it to set an example.
“We just want to make people aware that this is a problem in this city, and hopefully, landlords will step up.”
He said if they take legal action, they’d be looking for a cash settlement.
