Task forces calls for cost controls, more students at King’s

HALIFAX – A task force charged with tackling the financial crisis at the University of King’s College in Halifax is calling for cost controls and a push to attract more students.

The report obtained by the Halifax Chronicle-Herald says the university is grappling with a $1.1-million shortfall this year.

It says if things don’t improve there is a question whether the college can continue to operate independently.

The draft report says boosting enrolment and retention should be the school’s top priority.

It says that about 105 fewer students than expected enrolled at King’s this September _ an 8.8 per cent drop.

A drop of just one per cent translates into a loss of more than $100,000 in revenue for the university.

The report says changing the university’s academic offerings could also yield more revenues.

Right now, King’s offers strictly humanities and journalism courses.

However, changes require the approval of Dalhousie University.
