Post-storm flooding creates stress for HRM homeowners

Cleanup continues for hundreds of homeowners after yesterday’s early-morning storm brought some significant rainfall to HRM.

Lower Sackville resident, Marvin Leyte, told Global News this is the third flood in three years people in the neighbourhood have been faced with.

“[We] opened the basement door and we had a foot and a half of water in the basement,” he said.

Leyte said his basement gets flooded on such a regular basis that he has nowhere to turn when it comes to insurance coverage.

Eighty-two-year-old Gene Borland recently had knee surgery, and last year, she had a ruptured appendix.

She said she can’t fix her flooded basement herself.

“Sorry,” she said, wiping away tears. “I have to rely on somebody else to do everything for me.”

Residents said the finger can be pointed at Halifax Regional Water Commission, following construction they did three years ago.

The commission’s James Campbell said the cause of the recurring flooding hasn’t been pinpointed yet.

“We’re doing the best we can to try and find out if it’s something related to our infrastructure or not.”

As homeowners in HRM deal with the post-storm damage, the cause of the floods are still being investigated.
