Portland Place fire deemed suspicious

Police have commenced an arson investigation into a fire that destroyed a commercial building in central Halifax over the weekend.

The two-storey building on Portland Place was levelled on Sunday, and although no one was hurt, several nearby townhouses were evacuated as a precaution.

Const. Pierre Bourdages tells News 95-7 arson investigation can be a long process.

“We do have a number of highly qualified arson investigators that actually into the sometimes completely destroyed scene, and are able to, very slowly and painstakingly, go through the rubble and determine where these fires have started,” he said.

Bourdages asks anyone with information on the fire to call police at 902-490-5016.
