Fourteen drivers ticketed this week for failing to stop for school buses

Drivers in Halifax don’t seem to be getting the message that you have to stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing.

This week alone, Halifax Regional Police have ticketed 14 drivers at Hammonds Plains Road and Killarney Drive.

Police spokesperson Pierre Bourdages told News 95.7 he’s baffled.

“I don’t really understand what’s going on,” said Bourdages.  “This is not a new law, it’s something that has been in the book for decades.”

Bourdages said the most common excuse he’s heard from drivers is that they didn’t see the bus.

“They’re yellow, they have lights flashing, it’s quite obvious,” he said.

School bus driver John told The Rick Howe Show he’s not at all surprised.

“I would say on average I have at least one car a day run through my lights,” he said, adding Parkland Avenue is a particularly bad spot.

The penalty for failing to stop for stopped school bus with flashing red lights is $406.45, $693.95 for a second offence, and
$1,268.95 for any subsequent offences.
