Cabinet minister Zach Churchill defends pricey promotional trips to Boston

Natural Resources Minister Zach Churchill may have not taken the most economic flight options when he travelled to New England last spring to promote the Nova Star ferry service from Yarmouth to Maine.

According to the Chronicle Herald, the price tag for two trips he and his assistant, Shawn Lawlor, took to Boston in May totalled $12,600 — funded by Nova Scotia taxpayers.

The airfare alone cost nearly $9,000.

Churchill, who is also the MLA for Yarmouth, defended the expenses though, and said the promotional value of the trips was worth far more than the dollar amount.

The minister was sent to Boston to market the ferry service, and he said for the amount of people they reached while on the trips, the advertising costs would have been in the millions.

Churchill says the flights for both two-day trips were booked on short notice.
