Public warned to protect wi-fi connections after child porn bust

RCMP in Nova Scotia are warning people to make sure their internet connections are password-protected after a recent child pornography bust in Shelburne County.

Cst. Laura Seeley said 44-year-old Charles Cecil Slate’s house was raided on Tuesday. She says he had been using other people’s wireless internet connections to download and upload the images.

“One of the IP addresses was unsecured, and the others were secured and passwords were shared,” she said.

Seeley said the internet trail was traced back to the subscribers of the networks that he used, but added they wouldn’t be charged with anything.

“Not if you are not directly involved in the commission of the offence, no,” she said.

Anyone who has a wi-fi network should make sure it’s protected with a high-strength password featuring a combination of letters, numbers and symbols, Seeley added.

“You’re running the risk that your neighbour might be using your internet connection, and therefore your IP address, for malicious purposes,” she said.

Slate has been reported missing since the day of his arrest.
