Concerned citizen follows drunk driver, sees him crash car

Halifax Regional Police are thanking a concerned citizen for reporting and following a man after he drove off from a local restaurant last night after having too much to drink.

Staff Sgt. Lindsay Hernden says a 26-year-old Dartmouth man got into a minor car crash on Woodland Ave., got out of his car, and ran away, before the citizen reported him to police.

“We happened to have an off-duty police officer that was in the area,” he said. “The citizen approached him and pointed out the fleeing suspect, and the off-duty member arrested and subdued the suspect without incident.”

According to Hernden, the man is still in custody, and will be appearing in court at a later date.

“He’ll be going to court later to face charges of impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident,” he said.

He said last month, 104 people were charged with impaired driving, and about 37 per cent of those incidents were called in by concerned citizens.
