Fate of old Spring Garden library still unknown

The new Halifax Central Library is on the verge of opening its doors to the public, but the fate of the old Spring Garden Road library is still undecided.

Mayor Mike Savage told the Rick Howe Show on Monday that First Nations chiefs in Nova Scotia had originally planned on taking over the old library property, but that idea is no longer in the works.

“I got a letter from them saying they can’t put the money together. They would need support from levels of government, particularly federal,” he said.

He said there are still several ideas in the works, but assures the public the property won’t be sold for commercial development.

“It’s either going to be as-is for something, or it’s going to be green space, or else it’s going to go back to the province.”

Right now, there is still no official date set for when the new library will be opening, but a spokesperson said it will be sometime this fall, once the building’s safety inspections are all completed.
