Eighty-one year-old woman dies in hospital after being hit by car

Her name has not yet been released, but an 81-year-old woman who was hit by a car on Saturday afternoon died in hospital last night.

Halifax Regional Police Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs said the woman was crossing the intersection at Williams Lake Rd. and Herring Cove Rd. in a marked crosswalk with a walking signal, when she was struck by a car making a right-hand turn.

“She was taken to the hospital at that time with serious injuries,” he said. “And, last evening, she passed away from her injuries as a result of that car accident.”

He said no charges have been laid yet, but added that investigators will be in again this morning to continue working on the file.

“The driver of the other vehicle, his name would only be released if charges were laid. But at this time, the investigation is still ongoing, so I’m not sure if you would call him a suspect at this point. He’s just the driver of the other vehicle.”

The driver, he said, was a 71-year-old man.

McCoombs extended his thoughts to all those involved in the tragic incident.
