Kijiji search leads to three arrests, campers’ gear returned

Halifax Regional Police have arrested three people after campers at Long Lake Provincial Park had their backpacks stolen earlier this week.

Const. Pierre Bourdages said the campers spotted their backpacks listed for sale on the local classifieds site, Kijiji, the day after they had been stolen.

“So, they contacted police and we arranged a meeting with the sellers, and once the sellers arrived at the meeting point, they were arrested and found in possession of the goods stolen at Long Lake.”

Bourdages said a 47-year-old woman, and two men, aged 19 and 20, will appear in court at a later date to face several charges, including theft under $5,000, possession of stolen goods under $5,000 and trafficking property obtained by crime.

All three, he said, have been released from custody.

“They were actually released on condition to abstain from going to any park or beach in the HRM area,” he said.

Bourdages said the backpacks had camping equipment and electronics in them, and everything has been returned to the owners.

Police ask that anyone observing suspicious activity in or around parks and beaches should report it to police immediately at 902-490-5020. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.
