Woodlot owners hold Northern Pulp meeting

A meeting is being held tonight in Pictou County to clear the air over the pollution coming from the Northern Pulp mill.

The event is being hosted by the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association.

The group wants to end the knee-jerk reactions and open the discussion, with the ultimate goal of sustainable forestry in Nova Scotia.

Will Martin is the president of the association, which represents private woodlot owners.

“I think there’s a call for change here,” Martin said, “And we’ll be able to report back — to Nova Scotians, and particularly to Pictou County — about what the possibilities are, and what people are really saying.”

Martin says his organization also doesn’t want Northern Pulp to take advantage of woodlot owners’ “so-called dependence” on the mill to justify its actions.

The province has said there are thousands of forestry jobs connected to the Northern Pulp mill, and that’s one of the reasons the company is being given until next May to meet emission standards.

The meeting takes place Wednesday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre, from 7 to 9 p.m.
