SMU frosh week to focus on academics, consent

With the new school year approaching, Saint Mary’s University in Halifax says it’s taking control of frosh week.

The school made national headlines last year, when video surfaced of a frosh week chant that condoned underage and non-consensual sex.

The school’s vice president of external affairs, Margaret Murphy, tells Global News the focus of this year’s “Welcome Week” will be on academics.

“We’re not going to accomplish cultural change in one week,” said Murphy.

“It’s the start of activities that will roll out through the month of September, through this entire academic year and continue years beyond.”

Murphy says there will also be mandatory sessions for staff and students dealing with alcohol safety, bystander training and discussions on sexual consent.
