Tire recycling fee to increase 50 per cent

In Nova Scotia, it’s going to cost an extra $18 for winter tires if they’re bought after Sept 1.

And, truck tires will be costing an extra $54 with the province’s tire recycling fee going up by 50 per cent.

Sterling Belliveau was the NDP environment minister this time last year, and he told News 95.7 the Resource Recovery Fund Board (RRFB) asked him to hike the fees then.

He said he turned them down because they didn’t give a good enough reason for the increase, and now Belliveau is asking why the change, accusing the Liberals of another broken promise.

“They make these promises and they haven’t fulfilled them,” he said. “We’ve seen less than a year when you have a surplus in the RRFB of $500,000, they raise the user fees, so, it’s not right, and the minister needs to explain that to Nova Scotians.”

Neither the head of RRFB nor the environment minister were available to answer any questions, however, Randy Delorey’s office did comment in an email saying the RRFB sets the fees and does not require approval by government.

They say the fees for recycling used tires have not increased in 18 years, but the program is at the point where an increase is necessary in order to continue.
