Car crash has woman taken to hospital, another accident has man facing charges

A couple of roads were closed yesterday following two serious car crashes — one in in Dartmouth and another in Amherst.

Last night, Halifax Regional Police arrived on the scene of an accident involving one truck, three cars, and only one driver.

Sgt. Greg Robertson said a 40-year-old Dartmouth man was arrested for driving while intoxicated after he crashed his truck into a string of parked cars near Lake Charles Dr. on Waverley Rd.

“Officers also observed three unoccupied vehicles that were parked in front of a residence that sustained extensive damage,” he said. “The road was littered with debris from the back of the pickup truck.”

He said, among the wreckage, they found a gun, and the man was later charged with five weapons offenses, along with impaired driving.

“Amongst the debris was a firearm, which was seized by the officers.”

Robertson said the man was held in custody for a few hours overnight, and said he only received a few cuts and scrapes on his face during the crash.

“He was eventually released from police custody on a promise to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court,” he said. “The investigation is ongoing and there may be additional charges laid at a later date.”

Just hours earlier, another serious car crash left one woman in the hospital after a single-vehicle collision in West Amherst.

According to RCMP, the woman was driving on Southampton Rd. at around 8 a.m. when the crash took place.

She was taken to the QEII in Halifax, and RCMP said that crash is still under investigation.
