Woman says publication ban breached in Lyle Howe case

A woman who says she doesn’t know the woman personally in the Lyle Howe case, tells Metro Halifax she was outraged to see the sexual assault victim’s name on a Facebook page.

Nicole Pettipas says it was on the “Justice for Lyle Howe” group page and she was outraged enough to call police to report it.

Howe was convicted of sexually assaulting the young woman and was sentenced to three years in prison.

In Canadian Law, the identity of all victims of sexual assault are banned from being broadcast or published.

Pettipas says it seems like the only reason it was there was to shame the victim of a rape and that’s unacceptable.

It’s now up to police to see if there was a breach of the publication ban and to decide if someone should be charged.

The ban is in place unless a judge lifts it, which would only happen if the victim asked to have it removed.
