Work begins on steering system for Bluenose II

Equipment has been ordered for a new steering system for Bluenose II.

However, the man in charge of the project said it could take six to eight weeks to arrive.

The Premier’s deputy minister David Darrow told The Chronicle Herald, design work for the system is done and they’re doing everything they can to get the equipment here faster.

He couldn’t comment on how much this additional work will cost, and said he’s waiting on some final details.

A harbour trial in Lunenburg revealed the schooner needed the steering assistance system because the steel rudder requires more than three times the usual force necessary to turn the wheel of the ship.

The restoration project is about $6-million over its original $14 million budget, and is behind on its original delivery date of May 2012.
