Dog park plans unpopular at public meeting

The city’s proposed replacement for the Africville off-leash dog park met with strong resistance at a public meeting.

Dog owners crowded into the Halifax Forum’s Maritime Hall to voice their displeasure with the city’s idea for a new dog park, adjacent to the current one.

While most supported closing the current one because of its historical significance, the proposed site was roundly criticized for being too small, too hilly, and too dark.

Sabrina Giddings said the slopes would make it inaccessible for many.

“I’m a well-abled person, but I’m not going to tackle that hill in the winter. It’s going to be crazy, it’s going to be dangerous,” she said.

Councillor Jennifer Watts, whose district includes both the current and proposed sites, said she learned a lot at the meeting.

“I think that it’s provided some very helpful information provided to staff,” said Watts.  “People have indicated some other, very specific alternatives.”

One alternative that proved popular was the mainland common, which proponents said has the space and amenities necessary for a suitable replacement.

That leaves city staff with the task of finding a more suitable site – or sites – to bring to city council in the fall.
