New Brunswick businesses tally up Arthur costs

FREDERICTON – As crews in New Brunswick continue trying to restore electricity to customers affected by post-tropical storm Arthur, many businesses across the province are adding up their costs.

Holly’s Restaurant in Hampton was without power for five days after the storm hit July 5th, while the Tim Hortons next door had power and was packed with customers.

Owner Colin Sifton says he lost about seven-thousand dollars in food and about 12-thousand dollars in revenue, plus his 18 employees went five days with no salary.

He says power outages lasting several days are devastating to small businesses like his.

Kevin Cormier, the executive director of the Kings Landing Historical Settlement near Fredericton, says he expects he lost about 100-thousand dollars in the eight days they were without power.

At the peak of the storm, more than 140-thousand N-B Power customers were without power following the storm.

Crews have been hampered by weakened trees and limbs that continue to fall.
