Home for Colored Children settlement a step closer

Some former residents of the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children are a step closer to a landmark settlement with the province.

A motion for preliminary approval of a tentative, $29 million settlement was filed in Nova Scotia Supreme Court today.

Lead plaintiff Tony Smith said it was “a relief” to see Justice Arthur LeBlanc shake hands with lawyers from both sides.

“You can exhale now. Your guards don’t have to be up all the time. You don’t have to be on the defensive,” said Smith.

“It really signifies the fact that we’re starting the process of healing.”

Now that the motion for preliminary approval has been filed, the law firm representing the plaintiffs will advertise the tentative settlement for others who might be affected.

The number of plaintiffs currently stands at around 160, but Smith expects that to rise.

“The numbers can increase (by) 100, 200 or 300. We don’t know,” he said.

Justice LeBlanc is due to rule on the motion on July 7. If everything proceeds on schedule, the money will be handed out in October.
