Halifax nurses suspended for walking off job before legal strike position: union

HALIFAX – The union for nurses employed by the Capital District Health Authority in Halifax says its members who walked off the job last month before they were in a legal position to do so are being suspended.

Joan Jessome, president of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, says between 150 and 200 nurses who work at Halifax-area hospitals are being handed two-day suspensions.
Jessome says the move is heavy-handed and the union will file grievances in each case.

The health authority, which conducted meetings with the nurses to have them explain their actions, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Nova Scotia Labour Board issued a cease-and-desist order on April 1 after some nurses did not report for their shifts earlier that day.

The walkout forced the cancellation of dozens of surgeries as tensions rose ahead of a legal strike that was ended by essential-services legislation three days later.
