Nova Scotia gas prices hit record high

Gasoline prices in Nova Scotia have moved into record territory.

The price for a litre of regular self-serve jumped by 2.3 cents a litre at midnight moving the minimum price up to $145.6

That breaks the record of $145.4 set back in April of 2012.

There was an increase in the price of diesel overnight as well as prices jumped by 2.1 cents to a minimum of $140.1.

Paying some of the highest gas prices in Canadian history is one thing, but Nova Scotians have also been paying a gas tax on top of the tax we’re already paying, for years.

Kevin Lacey of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says the gas tax-on-tax is a scam, and if it were removed, it could save drivers four cents a litre.

“When gas prices are high, the big winner is government and the big loser is drivers and that’s why government is so hesitant to do anything because they earn more revenue as a result of higher prices,” he explains. “Premier McNeil made a commitment to tax payers to eliminate the tax-on-tax. Premier McNeil promised to provide relief to drivers.”

The deregulation of gas prices in Nova Scotia is another item on the Liberals’ agenda, but Service Nova Scotia Minister Mark Furey says that’s not happening in the foreseeable future.

“What I want to do is take appropriate time to look at the options of deregulation,” he says.

Finance Minister Diana Whalen says it could be three to four years before Nova Scotia see the gas tax-on-tax removed.

Premier Stephen McNeil says he intends to approach Ottawa about removing the provincial gas tax-on-tax, reducing the price drivers pay at the pump by a few cents a litre.

Gas prices are expected to peak at a $1.50 a litre thus summer, according to the V-P of Wilsons Fuel, David Collins.

One year ago we were paying a whole lot less to fill up the car.

Gasoline was selling at $125.4 or 20 cents a litre less than today’s price. Diesel was selling at $1.22 a litre.

Oil was trading on the markets at $93.65 U-S a barrel last year, about $8 less than yesterday’s closing price of $101.75.
