Nova Scotia Power CEO says energy upgrades would help as many as 6,000 homes

The CEO of Nova Scotia Power says its commitment to pay for energy saving upgrades for people with low incomes will help as many as 6,000 homes.

Bob Hanf says the program will see Nova Scotia Power provide up to $3.4 million annually over 10 years to cover the costs of the upgrades, which will be carried out by the Clean Nova Scotia Foundation, a non-profit charity.

Hanf says the money will fund measures such as improving or providing insulation, fixing wiring and insulating hot water heaters to help customers save more than $550 a year on their power bills.

He declined to provide details about discussions with the provincial Liberal government about its campaign promise to force the utility to foot the cost of efficiency programs.

The Liberals have come under fire this week after they introduced legislation that would allow Nova Scotia Power to pass on the costs to customers of running efficiency programs over eight years beginning in 2016, contrary to what they promised.
