Marine Atlantic adds ferry to clear traffic backlog

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – Marine Atlantic says it is bringing an extra ferry into service to help clear the backlog of commercial traffic caused by ice buildup in the Cabot Strait and poor weather.

Spokesman Darrell Mercer says the MV Leif Ericson will be added to the fleet today.

Three other vessels are also in operation.

As of yesterday, more than 200 truck and drop trailers were stuck at the ferry terminal in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.

They were awaiting winds to die down after the latest storm blew through the area, cancelling sailings.

Last week, heavy ice between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland led to a number of delays and cancellations.

It’s been a frustrating season for truckers who depend on the ferry service to transport goods, including perishable food.

Jean-Mard Picard, executive director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, says there’s not much truckers can do except be patient.

But he says when goods remain stuck in transit, it costs producers and trucking companies revenue.
