SYDNEY, N.S. – The mayor of Nova Scotia’s second largest municipality says residents simply cannot afford a tax hike.
Cecil Clarke declared a budget impasse last month, saying the Cape Breton Regional Municipality can’t balance its budget without tax increases or cuts to services.
At that time, Clarke said the municipality was looking at up to $5 million in additional costs it can’t afford.
However, that gap has since narrowed to just over $3 million.
The budget has been delayed until early May while officials try to figure out a solution to the municipality’s financial woes.
