Maritime Link project to create about 300 jobs: Emera

MILL CREEK, N.S. – A spokesman for Emera Newfoundland and Labrador says the $1.5-billion Maritime Link project should create about 300 jobs in both Newfoundland and Cape Breton over the lifespan of the project.

Jeff Myrick made the prediction during a public information session Tuesday in Mill Creek, N.S., about four kilometres south of where two subsea transmission cables will come ashore at Point Aconi, N.S.

The 500-megawatt transmission lines, each one the diameter of a two-litre pop bottle, are expected to stretch between Granite Canal, N.L., to a substation in Woodbine, approximately 18 kilometres southwest of Sydney.

Myrick says tree removal has already started at the Woodbine site.

Meanwhile, Nexans S.A. of Paris has been awarded the contract to install the 170-kilometre, direct current subsea power cables under the Cabot Strait between Cape Breton and southwestern Newfoundland at Cape Ray.

The project is expected to be completed in 2017.
