Rallies to save VIA Rail being held

MONCTON, N.B. – An Ontario Member of Parliament wants to save passenger rail service across Canada and today he has embarked on a VIA Rail trip between Halifax and Montreal.

The Green Party’s Bruce Hyer will hold public rallies during stops along the way including Moncton at 3pm with representatives from the tri-communities expected to attend.

Ted Bartlett, with advocacy group Transport Action Atlantic, is encouraging everyone who cares about rail service to come out to the rallies as a way of showing government it wants to keep the train running.

Bartlett says VIA Rail will be forced to end passenger service between Montreal and Halifax in July when CN has announced it will no longer be maintaining more than 70 kilometres of track in northern New Brunswick.

Despite calls from municipal leaders in the region, the Harper government has expressed no interest in saving the rail line.
