Storm to bring wind, lots of rain to Halifax Thursday night

If you thought we had escaped our weekly winter storm, guess again.

A double dose is set to hit us with lots of rain today and lots of snow Saturday.

Meteorologist Richard Zurawski says it starts with snow late this afternoon.

“Late afternoon we’ll get some flurries, the wind will gradually pick up, and then it’s all going to switch over to rain as the temperature rises overnight to about eight degrees,” he explains, adding once that happens, the winds will pick up to 90 km/h.

50 to 60 millimetres of rain will fall overnight melting the snow, but running off the frozen ground and Zurawski says that means localized flooding.

“We’re also going to have frequent reduced visibility because of the amount of rain coming down,” he says. “There will be heavy rain and a lot of the snow we have there will melt down but guess what happens after that? Everything freezes.”

We aren’t out of the woods after the city turns into a skating rink. By Saturday another system will move in and dump 20 to 25 centimetres of snow.

Zurawski says temperatures will stay below normal after that so that means we get to skate it and shovel it all next week.
