Another Wednesday winter storm has arrived

In what’s becoming a bit of a Maritime tradition, we’re enduring another Wednesday winter storm.

Unlike the last couple storms, however, this one has come later in the day, with the snow starting a little after 1 p.m.

It’s the third week in a row we’ve seen the wicked winter weather and meteorologist Richard Zurawski says we can expect 15 to 25 centimetres of snow by the time this storm dies down.

“A snowfall warning is in effect for the South Shore and for Halifax and for the Eastern Shore and it looks like Nova Scotia will bear the brunt of this storm,” he says.

He says the storm intensified as it rolls towards us and it’s already affecting a large area.

“It’s already affecting a large part of the eastern seaboard of the United States from New York, up to Boston, in through Maine as well,” he explains. “It’s one of these wide-reaching storms and it seems to intensify as it comes to the eastern seaboard.”

Zurawski says it’s going to be a messy drive home with the heavy snow hitting around 2 or 3 p.m.

“And then the wind is going to pick up so along with the snow, you’ve got blowing and drifting snow with frequent whiteouts and then it sort of tapers of as the evening progresses and by the overnight period it’s pretty much over,” he says, adding by midnight the snow should be done falling.

“So that means Thursday should probably be a pretty clear day, although the sun will be shining and it will be a little bit cooler, it’s still going to be a nice day,” he predicts. “At least it’s not going to be snowing.”

The snow won’t be going anywhere though.

Unlike the previous storms that started to melt pretty quickly, Zurawski says cooler than normal temperatures will help preserve this frozen precipitation.
