January thaw creates problems

High winds and heavy rains have created problems across the Maritimes in the wake of a major weather system which brought lots of precipitation and above normal temperatures to the region.

Thousands of people have lost power in Nova Scotia with scattered outages reported in the Halifax Regional Municipality on Sunday morning.

In Saint John, the heavy rain has led to a number of street closures and motorists are being advised to use caution and observe barricades and signage.

Precipitation began as freezing rain in New Brunswick yesterday and before the temperature rose and the rain started, roads became extremely icy.

Some sections of the Trans Canada Highway between Moncton and Fredericton were shut down after the road resembled a skating rink.
