Halifax-based warship makes record drug bust overseas

A Halifax-based warship on patrol in the Arabian Sea has made another big drug bust.

On Wednesday, the crew of HMCS Toronto boarded a ship off the east coast of Africa carrying 506 bags of heroin, weighing more than 538 kilos.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Tom Lawson, says it was a record bust.

“This marked the largest heroin seizure in the history of combined maritime operations.  So to HMCS Toronto to our officers and our crew…well done.”

The Toronto is on patrol in the region as part of an international effort to curb terrorism and deter piracy on the high seas.
