Chronicle Herald plans to charge for online news

The Chronicle Herald is following the lead of newspapers across the country and has announced it will start charging for its online content.

The Nova Scotia paper made the announcement in an editorial written by associate publisher Ian Thompson this weekend. There are no details on how much it will charge for online content, or when the pay wall will officially be implemented. However, Thompson writes paper subscribers will not have to pay for its digital products.

“The Chronicle Herald, like hundreds of other newspapers across North America, recognizes that’s not fair to our print subscribers and advertisers who pay our bills,” writes Thompson. “And, in any event, giving away your product is a lousy business strategy.”

Four months ago, the 189-year-old paper launched both The Chronicle Herald Weekend edition and the Monday-to-Friday redesign. Thompson writes with the pay wall, they will also enhance online content by providing more videos and “presenting more news in real time.”

The Herald says it will provide more details soon. Just recently, TC Media, which owns daily papers in Truro and Yarmouth, introduced a metered pay wall to its online content.
