CFL looking at expanding east, Halifax possible destination

The Canadian Football League in Halifax has long been a dream of both the city and the league and commissioner Mark Cohon says that dream could be getting closer to reality.

Reports surfaced last week of a meeting between Cohon and HRM mayor Mike Savage.

“I want to get to know the mayor and talk to him if there’s a vision for a stadium, but the conversation shouldn’t just be about a stadium, it should be about what can a stadium and the CFL do for the Maritimes and that’s the conversation we started to have,” said Cohon.

Cohon said the league is stronger than ever and he would embrace a true coast-to-coast CFL.

“We have record TV ratings, we have over $1 billion of news stadiums being developed in this country, or that have already been developed and we have Ottawa coming back next year with a redevelopment project,” he explained. “It’s now time to really think about whether we can bring a tenth team to Atlantic Canada.”

Moncton will host Touchdown Atlantic, a regular season game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes in September, but the commissioner said that doesn’t make the New Brunswick city a favourite for expansion over Halifax.
