More than 40 dogs left in cars during Halifax heat wave: police

Despite repeated appeals from Halifax police, it seems dog owners in HRM are not getting the message.

Over the weekend, police received 22 calls about dogs being left in hot cars, this is on top of more than 20 calls at the tail end of last week.

Cst. Pierre Bourdages says officers had to break and window, and unlock a door to get animals out because the owner couldn’t be found.

He says unfortunately, consequences in situations like this are limited.

“In extreme cases we could lay animal cruelty charges,” explains Bourdages. “But at this time, we haven’t seen a situation where this was appropriate. There is no fine or summary offence ticket that can be issued if an animal is left in a vehicle.”

He says he doesn’t know what it’s going to take for people to realize that animals can’t be left in hot cars.
