Auditor General to scrutinize Washmill Lake Underpass cost overruns

HRM’S Auditor General and his staff will be reviewing the controversial Washmill Lake Drive underpass.

Larry Munroe told council Tuesday he plans to do a full review into the $16 million overpass, created as a third entrance to the Bayers Lake business park.

Munroe says the project, which went over budget by $6 million, has been the subject of many questions.

“The question that is raised in the minds of many was raised by this council,” said Munroe. “It was suggested that we might wish to consider that in our work plan and we have considered that and included it.”

HRM’s Chief Administrative Officer Richard Butts said staff will be checking back in with HRM staff on the status of the reports.

“The obligation is on staff to report back to council on how we are managing the recommendations from the auditor’s report, not to report back to the auditor,” said Butts. “We will be bringing a report forward to council by the end of June.”

Munroe says he and his team will also be examining different pieces of Metro Transit’s performance.

A status report will be available next month on the recommendations made.
