Man waving gun startles residents, gets arrested

A man waving a gun scared people in Halifax on Wednesday morning.

An anonymous tip about someone waving a gun out the window of a minivan sent officers to Gottingen Street and Falkland Street at 7:35am, but police couldn’t find the vehicle.

Nearly an hour later, a call came in about the same thing at Evans Avenue and Berts Drive. While police investigated there, someone phoned 9-1-1 to say a man armed with what appeared to be a handgun was inside an apartment building on Dawn Street.

“Officers located the man inside the building, arrested him without incident and seized a replica handgun,” said police. “A minivan matching  the description provided by the callers was also located parked behind the building. The man was transported to police headquarters.”

John Phillip Longaphy, 54, is charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, using an imitation of a firearm in the commission of an offence, uttering death threats and breach of court order.
