Maritime based trucking association warns about shortage of Canadian drivers

Alarm bells are ringing in the trucking industry right across the country.

Projections indicate that there will be a major shortfall of qualified drivers for the industry in the next decade.

The Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association is aware of this impending crisis and its potential to harm the economy and executive director Jean-Marc Picard told News 95.7 part of the solution is to target graduating high school students.

“We need to create more awareness with the councilors in the high schools because it doesn’t feel like a career path that’s being echoed to the young people and we need to get to them to make them aware of the job and what it actually entails.” he said.

Picard added it’s not kids alone that will help to make up the shortfall; a trend is emerging that recently retired people are moving to the industry to fill the void as well.
