Group wants Emera Oval renamed; city says it won’t happen

The group called Solidarity Halifax is holding a vote to re-name the Emera Oval, but the idea probably won’t get much traction.

Councillor Jennifer Watts said the name will remain the same throughout the contract they signed with Emera.

In 2011 Halifax Regional Council granted Emera naming rights for the next ten-years for $500,000.

“I think what the group is doing is trying to raise the profile around the broader issues of sponsorship and how those decisions are made,” she said. “It’s my understanding that over the next couple of months there will be a report coming back to council about a further sponsorship policy.”

In November Oland Breweries quit sponsoring Halifax events until council comes up with a clear policy. The move was prompted because of controversy about the optics of alcohol companies sponsoring events aimed at children.
