Faculty at St. Francis Xavier University say bargaining unlikely to resume

The union that represents faculty at St. Francis Xavier University says no further talks are planned for this weekend and it is continuing to prepare for a strike on Monday.

Union president Peter McInnis said Saturday evening in an email that he feels the university administration is unlikely to modify its position until a strike has started.

The union says it can’t accept the latest contract offer from the administration because the raises on the table are well below the cost-of-living.

University president Sean Riley has released a statement saying progress has been made on many issues but the university believes the union’s demands are not reasonable.

A spokeswoman for the administration was unavailable for comment on Saturday.

The St. Francis Xavier Association of University Teachers represents more than 400 members who teach and do research.
