Teen gets life sentence for girlfriend’s stabbing death

A Cape Breton teen has been sentenced as an adult and will be starting a life prison sentence after being found guilty of second degree murder in the brutal death of his girlfriend.
Melvin Skeete Jr. appeared in a Sydney youth court Monday for the murder of Brittnay Green, 16, of Glace Bay.
“An adult sentence is a rare thing under the Youth Criminal Justice Act,” Crown prosecutor Steve Drake told the Canadian Press. “It’s not easy for a judge to impose an adult sentence. The YCJA, there are number steps that you have to go through before you can actually impose an adult sentence.”
But Drake said Judge Anne Derrick made a well-reasoned decision.
Green was first blugeoned and then stabbed 104 times, with four different knifes, when she was kileld in December 2010.
She and Skeete had been dating for three months when the incident happened at his grandfather’s home in Whitney Pier. Skeete was 16 years old at the time.
He will be eligible for parole in five years after being credited two years for time served.
