Suspected drunk driver brings down power pole

About 1,400 Nova Scotia Power customers started 2013 in the dark, with an early morning crash bringing down a power pole in Dartmouth.

Halifax Regional Police say the driver involved failed a breathalyzer test following the single-vehicle crash around 4:20 a.m.

Police estimate Portland Street could be closed at Gaston Road and Prince Arthur Avenue until early this evening as Nova Scotia Power needs to bring a new power pole in.

Police say a red, Chrysler Sebring struck a power pole and a fire hydrant in the 400-block of Portland Street, knocking the pole to the ground with power lines blocking all traffic on Portland. When the officers arrived, the 26-year-old male driver was standing behind his vehicle.

Suspecting he was impaired, officers arrested the man at the scene. He later failed a breathalyzer test at the police station.

The accused has been released from custody and will appear in court at a later date on impaired and failing a breathalyzer charges. He was not injured in the accident.

About 300 homes and businesses weren’t expected to be reconnected to the grid until about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
