Messy weather on the way for Maritimes

A snowstorm that wreaked havoc on one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season in southwestern Ontario Boxing Day is slowly moving into Quebec and the Maritimes this afternoon.
Winter storm warnings are in effect for much of Southern Quebec and Northern New Brunswick and Environment Canada has issued wind and rain warnings for parts of Nova Scotia.
“This evening and tonight it’s a mix of snow, ice pellets and rain,” says meteorologist Richard Zurawski. “Some areas, especially along the coastal regions could be experiencing winds as high as 100 kilometers per hour, especially along the South Shore.”
A winter storm watch is posted for north-central Nova Scotia and a rainfall warning is in effect for the Digby County area. The Halifax area has a wind warning with rain expected for the coastal areas but as much as 30 centimetres of snow inland.
For anyone catching a flight to or from Ontario, you may want to pack your patience.
“The combination of snow and blowing snow that makes this particularly nasty,” says meteorologist Arnold Ashton. “Any long distance travel if you can work around that then that would be ideal.”
Both Pearson Airport in Toronto and Montreal’s Trudeau Airport have cancelled scores of flights and travellers are urged to check schedules before leaving home.
Halifax Regional Police and RCMP are advising motorists to drive carefully.
