Parents are threatening to boycott New Germany Elementary School if a convicted sex offender returns to the classroom.

Parents were invited last night to the second of two South Shore Regional School Board meetings this week to discuss the reintegration of Grade 3 teacher, Peter Speight.

Speight pleaded guilty in May 2009, after he beckoned a woman to his car and then masturbated in front of her when she approached.

He was given a conditional discharge meaning he has no criminal conviction.

He was fired by the school board but a provincial Supreme Court ruling forced the school to rehire him. His teaching certificate was revoked by the Department of Education, but that too was appealed and reinstated.

Speight says he wants to return to work, and now the board is trying reintegrate him into the classroom.

Tuesday night’s meeting was only open to parents of children who attend the school. Grandparents, community members and local politicians were kept out.

Police were reportedly called when someone burst into the meeting.

Parent Jamie Brewer says she’s surprised Speight is close to getting his job back.

“If you’re going to committ it once, you generally go back and do it again.” said Brewer.

Jolene Emino Mailman has a step-grandchild in the school and questions the whole process.

“Why would you do that? Why would he want to come back to an area like this and a school like this?” questioned Emino Mailman.

A number of parents say they will transfer their children to different schools if Speight returns to the classroom.
