The weather as of late has felt more like June than December.

That may make for a good break as we head into winter, but it is playing havoc with plans to open the Emera Oval on the Common.

Oval Manager John Henry says in order to make good ice, crews need to have three consecutive days of subzero temperatures.

With Mother Nature not cooperating much these days, Henry said the plan is to try and lay a base down overnight when temperatures are cooler.

The ice plant at the facility is able to keep ice from melting in temperatures that approach double digits.

Henry says the biggest threat to the oval is rain, which is forecast towards the end of the week.

Skaters hit the oval on December 23rd last year, and Henry is hopeful that will be the same this year.
