Education Minister Ramona Jennex says students across the province will be learning in improved and upgraded schools.
Jennex says it’s part of the province’s Capital Plan.
“This is to make sure that we’re providing our students with the best space to do their learning, upgrading schools especially around technology, and some of our schools are aging,” explains Jennex. “Therefore we need to make sure we’re providing the best places for our students to learn.”
26 schools will be renovated across the province in 2013-14.
One of the projects includes a $2 million expansion at Ecole Du Sommet in Bedford; Jennex says this is due to inclining enrollment in the Conseil Scolaire Acadien provincial school board.
Meanwhile, Liberal education critic Karen Casey calls the upgrades a minor step in repairing the damage done by budget cuts.
She says the Dexter government has taken $65 million out of education, either through direct or indirect cuts.
Some of that is downloading inflation costs such as fuel onto boards.
“So the boards are getting less money, they’re having to pick up more costs, that translates into 65 million fewer dollars that our schools have to deliver programs to students and to support kids in the classroom,” says Casey.
The province has also set aside $500,000 to further study potential projects.
