The Nova Scotia Department of Education is revamping the formula it uses to decide how much money each school board is allotted on a yearly basis.

Liberal Education Critic Karen Casey says boards are already making tough choices.

“With less money coming to the boards, and a board is looking at their priorities, is there a chance that something like O-2 could not be offered by a board because they don’t have enough money?” she asks.

O-2 is a new career training program being offered in the province.

The Department’s Carole Olsen says it’s theoretically possible that programs will fall off the schedule in some boards, but it’s not likely.

“It might be possible for a board to say we don’t have a need, we don’t have a demand.  But I believe that being responsive to the local communities, being responsive to the needs of students, the boards wouldn’t make that kind of decision to just eliminate a program,” she says.
