A 16-year-old Halifax boy who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the beating death of an elderly woman last year has been given a two-year sentence.

The teenager, whose identity is protected, was sentenced Friday in Halifax youth court.

Judge Jamie Campbell ordered that the boy spend the first year of the sentence in custody at the Nova Scotia Youth Facility in Waterville, and the second year will consist of supervision in the community.

The youth was with an 18-year-old friend when they broke into the home of 79-year-old Lavinia Campbell last December to steal cigarettes.
